Reactions to the 9/11 Attacks

The attacks shocked people around the world. Most of the international public response to the attacks was favorable to the United States–sympathy, solidarity–but some nations or political groups were less charitable. For this assignment, you will research the international response to the 9/11 attacks, which was reported in the American press. I suggest examining major news coverage in ProQuest Historical Newspapers in the library’s database collection, but Google searches may also be useful in helping you to isolate specific responses that have been written about retrospectively. There is also a fairly robust Wikipedia page on “Reactions to the 9/11 Attacks” that can get you started. However, even if you use recent articles about reactions to 9/11, I would still like you to examine 2001 reporting in the US press.
In a short essay, describe the international response (in some cases, there were very specific gestures of support) in the immediate aftermath of the attacks (within days). If you choose 1 country to discuss, choose 2 responses from within that country. Alternatively, choose 2 countries and compare the reactions. Your essay should consider the following questions:
What was the relationship between the nation/political group and the United States in 2001?
How was the nation/political group’s response to 9/11 similar to or different from its normal relations with the US?
