For this Discussion, read or watch the following: (I WILL PROVIDE THE LINKS IN OUR MESSAGES)
How Roman Architecture Influenced Modern Architecture (Links to an external site.)
Traces of Ancient Rome in the Modern World (Links to an external site.)
The Art of Stoicism: Beyond Not Caring (Links to an external site.)
Suetonius’ The Twelve Caesars Explore Virtues and Vices in Ancient Rome (Links to an external site.)
In a paragraph of between 250 and 500 words, select one of the items above, identify the author’s main points and assess the argument they have presented. Is the argument convincing? Do you agree with all of the points made, or only a few? Which ones and why? What has the author made less important than it should be?
Then, for the last part of the discussion, do one of two things (do not do both of the options; pick one):
OPTION ONE:
Focus on the first two articles, and design a structure, based on Roman principles of architecture and using Roman architectural elements of the arch, vault, and the idea of functionality and practicality. This structure needs to have at least three rooms, and must do the following: reflect how we, as people who live in 2020, live, work, and play. It must be a structure which includes all those functions (work, play, and “live”). It must follow the design principles common to Roman structures, that is 1) use the arch and barrel vault, 2) be primarily practical, and 3) have visual decoration or architectural embellishment (e.g., sculptural panels, such as those seen on the Ara Pacis). You need a plan of your building, and at least one elevation, showing the facade or an interior wall with the decoration/embellishment mentioned in #3 above. You may hand draw this, or you may use a computer generated image. Then you need to write a description and explanation of the rooms in your plan, and how they are used in our everyday life (please use complete sentences). For 10 points extra credit, design a piece of furniture to put into the room, and explain that as well. Remember, this is meant to be a building which combines the design and architectural qualities of Ancient Roman architecture with the functions that we, today, need in our lives. You will need to upload both the written part of this, as well as the designs (please be aware that I cannot open HEIC files, and because of the due date of this assignment, I may not be able to contact you to send me the proper image format. Save the images as jpegs, please).
OR
OPTION TWO:
Focus on the last two items on the list, and select one work of art from Ancient Rome which best reflects either the ideas found in Stoicism, or those found in the writing of Suetonius, and then identify a work of art from between 1980 and 2020 which does the exact same thing, or send the exact same message. You will need to write a description and explanation of why you selected both the ancient piece and the Contemporary piece, how each relates to the ideas of the two authors (Suetonius and Marcus Aurelius) and then end with a paragraph assessment of which work best shows the ideas of either Marcus Aurelius or Suetonius. Please note: you cannot select any work which depicts Marcus Aurelius, Suetonius, or any of the Caesars. Please include an image of each sculpture, if possible. If not, please fully identify the works, so I can find them.
You may have factual information which needs citing. If so, you must have both citations and a bibliography. This should be at least 500 words.
