Welcome to Lesson 4. In this lesson you will be challenged to learn many different ethical theories and how they can affect law enforcement individuals moral and ethical decision making. There are many police practices were the variables of ethics can affect the outcome of a situation.

Becoming a law enforcement officer is not an easy task.Law enforcement agencies closely scrutinize the moral history of an applicant by thorough background checks, polygraphs, detailed interviews, and integrity questionnaires. Each of these methods is used to root out applicants who may have exhibited poor moral choices in their past. Right or wrong, law enforcement agencies view past performance as a predictor of future moral performance.

There are several different types of ethics discussed in this lesson. Below are some of the key theories. Try to put each one into modern day practice as you review them.

Utilitarian ethics is a normative ethical system primarily concerned with the consequences of ethical decisions; therefore, it can be described as a teleological theory or consequential theory, both having a notion that the consequence of the act is the most important determinant of whether the act is moral.
Kantian logic, a Deontological theory, is the most complex of all ethical systems you will explore. The word deontology comes from the Greek word deon, meaning obligation or duty. This ethical system is primarily concerned with one’s duty. It is also known as ethical formalism or absolutism.
Virtue ethics has its historical background in ancient Greece and was primarily developed by Aristotle. The idea is that if you are a good person then you will do good things, and you must do good things to be a good person.
