How did early Americans’ expectations compare to their lived experiences?
Once you have read this week’s chapter in American Yawp and analyzed the primary sources listed in the links above, consider again the theme expectations and outcomes. How do the Week 5 – 7 readings/viewing shape your understanding of early Americans’ expecations versus their lived experiences? Do this week’s readings support your earlier argument? Do they make you rethink it?

Step One: Introduction
First, read my comments on your midterm writing assignment and revise your assignment as necessary.
Revise or write a new introduction to your midterm writing assignment with a thesis that responds to the prompt in a way that is inclusive of all of the readings from the semester.
Next, at the end of your midterm writing assignment, write a paragraph that again answers the prompt on expectations and outcomes as releflected in the readings from Weeks 5 – 7. This paragraph will serve as a transition between your midterm writing assignment and this final writing assignment. The paragraph should again have a thesis statement (argument) and lay out the theme(s) you will discuss from the Weeks 5 – 7 readings.

Step Two: Body of Essay (Using Evidence to Support Your Thesis)
Organize the body of your the new part of you writing assignments (Weeks 5 – 7) in paragraphs that each have a clear topic sentence (the main point of the paragraph). The topic sentence must support yout thesis, so always keep your thesis (the main point/contention/argument) of your paper in mind as you construct each paragraph. Organize your paragraphs by topic; then use one or more (related) primary sources that explain or illustrate your main point. Each paragraph should be several sentences long. Use transitions at the end of each paragraph to move from one topic to the next.
Each paragraph in the new part of your writing assignment must use evidence from the primary sources we read and discussed during Weeks 5 – 7. Use the evidence to support your thesis. You must use at least 6 of the primary sources from Weeks 5 – 7. You must use at least one source from each of those weeks (the other sources can be from any week 5 – 7). Use the information you learned from the textbook and other assigned secondary sources to help contextualize the primary sources. This means that you should think of the textbook information as “background” info from which you should identify and apply relevant historical information to make sense of primary sources. Don’t guess what the primary sources mean. Analyze them using the textbook.

Step Three: Conclusion
Your writing assignment must end with a concluding paragraph. Your conclusion should reiterate your main thesis from your introduction as well as the most important main points or topics you explored throughout the essay, and should explain the significance of the topic (in other words, “why is this important/significant to the study of early American history?”).
Mechanics and Citations
For your writing assignment, double-space your paper, use 12 point font and standard margins. Cite your sources (use MLA or Chicago Manual Style. The new part of your essay should be a minimum of 8 – 10 good paragraphs. Combined with your revised midterm assignment, your essay should be ~15 – 20 paragraphs.
