Graphic Essay on Night and Fahrenheit 451
A graphic essay is a visual that uses words, color, and other visual representations (like symbolism) to make a unified statement. You will complete your graphic essay individually as an in-class assessment. You can work after the class ends only when I deem it necessary.
You want to ensure the pieces of your graphic essay all work towards proving the thesis you choose. Your thesis must show how authors of Night and Fahrenheit 451 reflect your selected themes to be compared. In other words, you are focusing on showing how each of the three themes are evident in these two novels.
The goal of this graphic essay is to help you to synthesize and organize details and ideas from Weisel’s and Salinger’s fictional narratives. The primary purpose of the graphic essay is to help you THINK, ORGANIZE, and INTEGRATE your thoughts, not to produce a fancy art product without context.
REQUIREMENTS:
1. Your graphic essay includes an effective thesis statement identifying the themes in the novels and how they are interwoven.
2. Your graphic essay uses color in a rational way; color can be used symbolically and/or as an organizational device.
3. Your graphic essay uses a unifying symbol or symbols. Symbols arise naturally from the literature and connect to the themes identified as part of your overall thesis.
4. You must include relevant quotations (clearly cited- quotation marks and page number) and specific references to the text in your graphic essay.
5. Your quotations must come from Night, and Fahrenheit 451 You may include other connections from class readings and your life experiences (e.g., film, independent reading, and philosophical quotes).
6. You must also include interpretive commentary for each quotation and/or event that you choose to use. In other words, explain the quotation. Mentioning it is not enough.
7. Your graphic essay needs to be large enough, neat, and thorough in content. You can produce it in Word, PPT, other drawing software, or by hand. You will not be able to explain your graphic essay to the class, so make sure the written work clearly explains all the connections and symbolism you intend.
1. Make a summary of both novels.
2. Use guiding questions and the discussion to make annotations.
3. Decide what themes you will show through your graphic essay and decide what textual evidence you will use to support your ideas.
4. Decide what your unifying symbol(s) or image(s) will be that relate to the text.
