Analysis of a museum building project
Select a museum that has constructed a new building or an expansion/renovation to an existing building. Choose an aspect of the building project and present what you view are the most important aspects. For example, you could focus on an aspect of the architecture: the overall design and how it relates to the museum’s goals, mission, and needs (is the renovation/expansion necessary?); a specific new gallery space, for example one designed for performance art or for educational programs. Another option is to analyze a museum’s process for building a new site or an expansion, why did they choose a certain architect, who made the decisions, was there controversy surrounding the projects?), how was the the project promoted -did they undertake a rebranding and what was their advertising campaign like, did they organize partnerships (like MoMA and Uniqlo) to cross-promote their new image. The fundraising aspect is another topic you might choose, how did they raise the funds, did that generate controversy, did they develop new funding streams, what was their financial plan to justify the need for the project? Another important issue is the relationship to the neighborhood, are the neighbors happy with the project, are there controversies such as those related to changes to historical building, what about the impact of a museum expansion in the neighborhood in terms of real estate development and gentrification?
