Write out the thesis you will use for your midterm paper answering the question, “What is the Problem of Evil?” You can use what I provided you and then build your supporting argument and opposing argument around it, or you can go a different direction. You can argue the ‘Problem of evil is… ignorance,’ or the ‘Problem of evil… is the Internet,’ or the ‘Problem of evil is… this class’ (this has been done and done very well, so be careful if you choose this direction, you have big shoes to fill.) Remember, this is not an opinion paper, meaning you must substantiate every premise you present. Do not commit the logical fallacy of begging the question or when the argument’s premises assume the conclusion’s truth instead of supporting it. The midterm paper will be due on Sunday, October 31st, by midnight. We will be looking at a few topics over the next couple of weeks to help build your argument, specifically some writings on free will, determinism, identity, and morality. That is why we are working on the thesis now so you can develop your paper as we go.
