. I
will grade each essay on a pass/fail basis. Here is what you need to do to earn
a passing grade on each essay:
·
Write
a minimum of 500 words.
. NO PLAGIARISM (intentional or unintentional is careless) use paraphrazing
o
If
you write less than 500 words, you will automatically fail the essay.
o
500
words is about the same as one single-spaced page of text, or two double-spaced
pages of text.
o
Direct
quotations do not contribute
to the word count.
·
Each
essay should address all of the main points in the corresponding question
prompt.
·
You
must use in-text citations with corresponding page numbers.
o
Example: “Harari (2015:3) argues that humans descend from
great apes.”
§ Author last name (Harari)
§ Year of publication (published
in 2015)
§ Page number where the information comes from
(page 3)
Complete
this week’s readings in the following order. I encourage you to read one text,
then answer the accompanying essay question before turning to the next reading.
This read-write-read-write approach will make sure that the information
from each reading is fresh on your mind while you are writing.
Skarbek,
David. 2014. The social order of the underworld: How prison gangs
govern the American penal system. Oxford University Press.
1) Chapter
Four: Governance in the Society of Captives
Note: I have assigned three chapters from Skarbek (2014). Instead of
making photocopies of these chapters, I found an online version of the book
that presents each chapter as a PDF. However, the page numbers for the PDF are
different from the page numbers in the book. For example, the bottom of page 16
of the PDF for Chapter Two looks like this:
This is page 16 of the PDF, which contains text from pages 28-29 of
Skarbek (2014). The bold-faced (p. 29) indicates the point in the book
where page 28 turns into page 29.
Since the page numbers for the PDF are different than the page numbers
for the book, you can use either “page number” for your in-text citations, but
please don’t mix the two.
I included the lecture videos for additional information please review.
Essay #3 (Chapter Four)
Address both of the following prompts.
Part One
·
Describe the “community
responsibility system.”
o How does this system resolve the problems
posed by “impersonal exchange”?
Part Two
·
Explain
the connection between the “community responsibility system” and prison gangs.
