1. Choose one example of conspiracy theory and using the questions of multimodal analysis, do a complete analysis of the video or article. Start by listing the seven basic facts of the text or what we call the rhetorical situation. Media type, publication, author, intended audience, date, title, purpose and historical context. How does the video use various techniques of visual, linguistic, aural, gestural and spatial modes to appeal to the viewers? Does the video appeal to ethos? Pathos? Logos? Why do you think people watch these videos? Why are they so popular? Do you think people believe what the conspiracy is telling them?
2. What is Hate News? This was one of the media types in Module 2. Find an example (this is not easy) and put the link here. Discuss this example in a little bit more detail. Who is the intended audience and what is its purpose? How is Hate News different than Extreme Bias and Political Commentary and Mainstream News? Look at the link by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) to answer these questions. Should this kind of media be illegal? What is at stake in allowing this kind of media to circulate online? Can the violence that it promotes be controlled? What do you think?
