Literature ReviewGuidelinesA literature review is a survey of work based upon a common subject, theme, or goal. The work consulted typically takes the form of peer-review articles and academic books. The literature review performs many functions, but for our purposes will be used as away for you to identify and explore an interest in a specific theory, tradition, or phenomena. For this class, it will take the form of a short research essay that brings forth multiple texts and puts them in a conversation with one another around a central topic (that topic might simply be their use of a common theoretical perspective). Most importantly, the literature review goes beyond summary and comparison, requiring you to evaluateand synthesizethe work of others into a cohesive “snapshot”of what has been said about your topic.A good literature review will continually reference the literature being reviewed rather than simply discuss article #1, then article #2, then #3, and so forth.
