Generalization and Discrimination
Generalization and discrimination training are both necessary in the teaching process. Discrimination training is used to teach the difference between one skill, environment, or stimuli and another. Generalization is taught to help individuals apply the knowledge they have to new and appropriate people, environments, and stimuli. Consider the following case study:
Casey is engaging in vocal stereotypy (self-stimulatory vocal sounds) in all environments. His parents have expressed concern that the noises are interfering with his life. His parents want these behaviors to be completely eliminated. The BCBA supervisor on the case has discussed the issue with his parents and it has been determined that the self-stimulatory behavior should not be eliminated, but altered.
