Imagine you had been sent back to the year 1500 by the top secret Bureau of Winners and Losers (B.O.W.L.). Which of the following would have seemed to be most likely to have taken over the world after 1500: Britain, Spain, China, the Ottoman Empire, or the Aztec Empire? Choose any three to compare/contrast in order to develop your answer based on fact, date, example, and concept. You may wish to develop an economic, cultural, military, political, or other model to help you make your case.
Christianity/Islam Buffet – I’m providing you with choice. Select any ONE version of Question 2 and answer it in a multi-paragraph essay:
B1. Compare and contrast the essential points of Christianity and Islam and explain the spread of each.
B2. Imagine a conversation between two wounded veterans of the Battle of Tours (AD 732), in which the Franks withstood and defeated a very powerful Muslim army. The two men’s injuries prevent them from harming each other, but they have crawled under the shelter of the same tree, which they have propped themselves up against. Write an essay in which you imagine how each man would explain his faith to the other and explain the outcome of the battle (the spread of his religion in the world). B3. The way we introduce ourselves matters, but so does the way we leave. Read the last moments and words of Jesus (Gospel of John and Acts of the Apostles) and read Mohammed’s last message (Hadith). Use what you have read to write an essay comparing and contrasting the essential points of each man’s teaching and then explain the spread of each faith that developed around those teachings.
