Background information for the course:
The first purpose of the course is to provide participants with a basic understanding of why and how evaluations are carried out in the United States and other countries. Such evaluations may bear on national or state policies, local or regional projects, or single-site evaluation projects. The evaluations may pertain to issues and interventions in education, civil, or criminal or juvenile justice, health, housing, and social services.
A second purpose of the course is to acquaint students with a broad array of contemporary examples of evaluations and of different approaches to evaluation and performance measurement, and about information resources on the topic.
The third important purpose of the course is to assure that participants understand when and how to generate dependable evidence in an evaluation, how to assure that it is accessible, and how to increase the likelihood that good evidence is used.
Information and requirements for the paper:
The main paper required for this course must relate to the course content. In particular, some specific aspect of one (or more) the big questions addressed in evaluation studies and the generation of dependable evidence to answer the question has to be considered. Recall the short list of big questions at the front of this syllabus.
The paper’s topic may be related to your job activity. It may be done in preparation for later work on dissertation or theses. It may concern ideas that have emerged as important gaps in understanding or evidence during the seminar. It may serve as background for subsequent proposals to acquire funding for research, development, or evaluation of a program or practice or policy in the field. Dependable statistical evidence is important, regardless of topic.

Examples of topics that are pertinent include the following.
Combining qualitative and quantitative methods in an evaluation
Comparing judgments about evidence and programs across different “what works” types of clearinghouses, for particular interventions.
Analyzing program failures and learning from failure.
Review of evaluation in particular areas, e.g. with regard to “needs” or “nature and severity” of problems, estimating number of illegal aliens, number of children at risk, number of people who are victims of human trafficking, etc.
Review of impact evaluations in your particular area of interest
Reviews of work on how to dependably measure program delivery, fidelity, or implementation in your area of interest.
Analysis (or reanalysis) of a set of publicly available data on web site from a statistical agency in the context of evaluation questions.
Review of research or development of “user networks” and the engagement of end users in the design or conduct of particular evaluation studies.
Reconnaissance for a proposal to evaluate a particular program/practice/policy/activity, including field work and review.
Laws (statues) that influence the production or use of high quality evidence.
Proposal for a baby systematic review of studies in accord with guidelines of the Campbell Collaboration or Cochrane Collaboration, and exploratory work on the topic.
Evidence on low quality of data/administrative records in your particular area of interest
Institutional or political origins of particularly important evaluation.
Evaluation policy in one or more service provider agencies or multinationals.
Extra information and requirements for me
The prof didn’t prescribe a specific topic, but the topic I want is teenagers’ suicide because I think this topic has lots of resources that can be used.
Please include some examples or statistical analysis about RCT(randomized controlled trials, including meta-analysis) and give more examples or other statistical methods for analyzing the topics.
Please include some sources or citations about the course materials, or some information talked about in the class.
