Interview training for individuals with autism spectrum disorders
• Clearly describe the overall characteristics of the studies reviewed (1-2 paragraphs):
– How many studies met the inclusion criteria?
– When were they published?
– In what journals?
– How many participants were involved across the studies and what were their general characteristics
(males vs. females, disability diagnosis, etc.)?
– What skills/behaviors were measured across studies?
– What was the intervention(s) across studies?
– Any additional notable information pertaining to your research questions and summarized across
the studies
• Present the reviewed studies (including summary and critique) in a logical order according to the
themes that emerged across the studies in response to the specific research questions
• Group the studies based on the themes and constructs; compare and contrast studies (if applicable);
explore contradictory findings; highlight homogeneity or heterogeneity of the studies; explore trends
and patterns; and/or comment on the quality of studies (choose at least one of these approaches)
• Summarize the research studies in a single summary table. You may include the following columns in
your summary table:
– Author/Years
– Publication outlet
– Purpose of the study
– methods used in the study (specific columns here will depend on your research questions – is it
important for you to report who the participants were? And/or is it important for you what research design was used? And/or is it important for you what types of measures were used? Etc.
– Major finding
Discussion section should:
• Be 1-2 pages long
• Discuss what the reviewed research means
• Support discussion points with references from reviewed studies
• Discuss practical implications of reviewed research
