Vonnegut’s science fiction infused, anti-war, novel is a fine example of meta
writing was first published in 1969, in the middle of the Vietnam War. In this
novel we follow Billy Pilgrim before, during, and after Pilgrim’s experience in
World War II; specifically, the Dresden Bombing. Billy is captured, held
prisoner, freed. Is he a survivor of war or a victim of war? Certainly, Billy
is a victim of war as Vonnegut is hailed for having written an anti-war novel.
