What role should the teacher take in a literacy-centered classroom?

You will write a culminating paper as a final summation of your insights learned in the course. Cite evidence to support all claims. It is necessary to paraphrase and synthesize cited ideas from your readings, as well as use applicable quotes sparingly. Also, refer to practicum experiences, interactions with students, and course discussions. Although this task requires reflective thinking, it is NOT simply an informal reflection. This research-supported paper should succinctly make specific and intentional points supported by the readings and ideas shared in many ways throughout the course. The length of the paper should be at least 1,500 words and no more than 2,500.
As you reflect on the three different sections, make sure to frame your ideas within these three areas:
A) Class textbook readings, article readings, module activities, shared resources, and small and whole group course discussions
B) Experiences with reading aloud to small and whole groups, teaching lessons, the transcript analysis, and other course and field literacy components within your placements
C) Specific children’s picture and chapter books of many genres you have analyzed, read, and/or discussed
Refer to the 3 areas mentioned above (A-C) as you cite and frame your points in Sections 1-3 below.
Section 1: Role of the Teacher and Children’s Literature = 30 points
· What role should the teacher take in a literacy-centered classroom? What does that role entail and what behaviors of the teacher matter?
· What are purposes of reading aloud and sharing children’s literature in a myriad of ways? What are strong practices for this type of sharing and why are these practices used with children in P-6 education?
· What is the importance of the consideration of book choice and reading preparation prior to read alouds and lessons using children’s literature?
· What are the many aspects a teacher should consider when critically analyzing children’s literature before including texts and multimodal literacy resources in a classroom learning opportunity or classroom library?
· Address how your abilities to select texts, to read aloud with students, and to provide an emphasis on literacy in the classroom environment have changed throughout the course.
Section 2: Children and Children’s Literature = 30 points
· How does student autonomy connect with children’s literature? In what ways would that be visible in a classroom?
· What do you know about representation, interaction, socialization, collaboration, and active engagement regarding children’s literature?
· How did you personally engage children in read alouds and how did that relate to the participation and discussion that occurred? In what ways did you notice your own strengths and in what ways will you continue to build on areas that may still need growth?
· Why are questioning, commenting, and responding useful as strategies in connection to children’s literature and how might that effect student learning outcomes?
· What other insights do you have related to engaging children with texts and pedagogies that you have tried or would like to try?
Section 3: Opportunities for Learning in Relation to Children’s Literature = 30 points
· Describe specific instances of learning that occurred expectedly or unexpectedly in the course in relation to children’s literature. Briefly describe books, contexts, ideas, occasion for reading engagement, etc.
· In what specific ways were you able to build subject knowledge and/or skills in yourself or in your students before, during, or after any experiences with children’s’ literature?
· In what ways were your literacy experiences in this course, or promoted in this course, similar or different from what you have done before in your placements or courses? What do you know now to be true from this comparison?
· What are the areas of emphases learned through the course and supported by research that should be implemented for students to be able to articulate new knowledge gained from or through children’s literature?
· Thinking back on the lessons in their first submission and then after receiving feedback and teaching them, what do you now know?
NOTE:
The paper should be professionally written, revised, and edited to represent your best thinking and writing. Points will be deducted for editing issues, for not fulfilling appropriate length related to depth of analysis, and for not correctly using APA format including a reference page with many resources utilized for the above arguments. = 10 points
