Pre-Sentence Report Assignment –
Students are
required to write a pre-sentence report about a fictional offender. -Case study
B For the PSR, when you do this follow the sample PSR that I have posted for you.
Case Study A

As you read your case
study B – your objective is to pull
pieces from the case in order to develop your report. For example, in the sample
case study A you will see that the offender has other underlying issues in
addition to alcohol. Underlying issues such as strict parents, cross-cultural
issues, traditional values. These are just some of the examples that you will
pull together to develop your report for Mr. Iam Stoned.
Discussion of these
What are the factors will reflect in greater detail in your assessment section and in the
personal history section. Also, I will permit you to embellish (meaning: to
exaggerate with the information provided).

You can be as
creative as possible (i.e., renaming the persons, creating information that is
not indicated in the case study). This is a fun exercise but at the same time
teaching you how to prepare a court report for the judge in assisting the court
in arriving at a sentence for the offender. You can embellish information.
Please do not
indicate type of custodial sentencing, or if the offender deserves jail time.
This is not your role, simply, your role is to be as objective as possible
stating either the person before you is at risk of re-offending and what
is the risk of that re-offending? is it low, medium or high? Why? You determine
this after you assess the offender using your understanding of the risk
assessment factors.
Risk Need
Responsivity Factors.

I ask you to also make recommendations-
section to the judge (end of report) what you think the offender needs are? For
example, counseling but what type of counseling, what are the risk, needs,
responsivity issues so that you can put forth a good plan on if the offender
does receive Probation, you will be supervising him/her. Be as specific as
possible.
