Write a reaction paper on the musical piece. In a five-paragraph paper, answer the questions:
Introduction paragraph: This paragraph should include a comprehensive statement that provides the context for the overview of the paper.
For the second paragraph:
Listen to the first six sections of the piece, demonstrating the sound of each of the four instrument families (woodwinds, brass, strings, and percussion) separately, then together. Of the four families of instruments, if you could pick one family to learn how to play an instrument from, which one would you choose? Why? Of the four families, which would be the family you would least want to learn how to play an instrument from? Why?
For the next two paragraphs:
Listen to the next seventeen sections of the piece, demonstrating the sound of each of the instruments in the orchestra. From each family of instruments, pick one instrument, and write about the picture that comes in your mind when you hear that instrument being prominently displayed in the piece. (For example, I would say that, from the string family, the violin portion of the piece paints the picture in my mind of an opening parade to a bullfight, and then I would elaborate on the picture. This means, of course, that the only instrument you are not allowed to choose is the violin…). Discuss the woodwinds and brass in the second paragraph, and the strings and percussion in the third paragraph.
For the fifth and final paragraph:
Listen to the remaining sections of the piece, the fugue. Write a little about what a fugue is (do not just copy a definition), and then talk about how you hear and understand the fugue in this piece, now that you know about the timbres of all the orchestra instruments and families.
