For RR 3, you will follow the directions below. Be sure to introduce your claim, support claims with in-text citations from the readings, and follow it up with some kind of analysis or application (ISA). Write at least 500 words total, and be sure to include the word count in the heading as required and as shown on the example RR.
Drawing from this week’s readings, do the following:

The readings this week by Gee and Wardle, along with Porter’s article from Week 4, introduce ideas and provide a framework for you to consider the course concepts we’ve studied as a whole. As you read, think about reflectively about the arguments and concepts the authors used regarding discourse community/Discourse/Activity System.
Do This
Write at least 500 words total, in which you do the following three tasks…
1) Respond to at least one of the following three bullet points and be sure to include an in-text citation:
Gee argues that reading and writing never happen, and thus can’t be taught, apart from some Discourse. Further, he argues, teaching someone to read or write also means teaching them to “say, do, value and believe” as members of the Discourse do (para. 24). Do you agree with this? Why or why not? Be sure to support your argument with specific examples/ evidence.
How does Gee define enculturation? Do you believe there was an enculturation process at work during this course? How so?
Wardle quotes Rubin as saying that “stylistic options ‘leak’ clues about writers’ social identities” (para.10). Explain what this means and provide an example from your own experiences.
2) How does Gee define literacy? Connect this idea to one (or more) of the readings we have already done during Weeks 1-4, including an in-text citation the reading you mention.
3) Drawing on Wardle (who cites Wenger), what are the three ways that newcomers try to belong in a new community? Give a specific example to illustrate each “mode of belonging.” Then consider why a newcomer might choose not to participate in some aspects of a new community. Be sure to include an in-text citation.
Since you are including in-text citations for each of the three above, be sure to have a correctly formatted Works Cited page, just as the sample RR has.
