Volkswagen is an international organization that has self-identified as having a corporate social responsibility (CSR) strategy. A corporate social responsibility (CSR) is when a business commits and has a responsibility to the society. They’re typically organized in a sense that they must act in a socially responsible way. “It’s a form of self-regulation that can be expressed in initiatives or strategies, depending on an organization’s goals” (Stobierski, 2021, p.1). Volkswagen completely failed at implementing the CSR strategy and in fact during this time did away with their emission control testing. “Volkswagen decided that it didn’t matter if its cars poisoned the planet by emitting 40 times the legal limit of nitrogen oxide, as long as doing so allowed it to become the world’s leading car maker”. They implemented the CSR strategy but due to management’s mentality thought that looked good and was enough for the economy. This ended up causing poor performance and a lot of damage to our world. These strategies need to be implemented with means to carry them out and not just as a cover for a company to maintain their image. This was a huge disconnect between leadership and the strategy and involved some huge ethical issues. The big problem with CSR is that it is asking and allowing companies to self-regulate. This could lead to detrimental issues in the wrong hands. Unfortunately, Volkswagen isn’t the only company out there taking this approach and CSR is an ineffective strategy in the wrong hands that can create more bad than good. Serious consideration is necessary before implementing (Dans, 2015, p.1).
