In the academic world, to some extent the student is the audience. We wait for the teacher to curate the material and lessons, lay everything out in an organized fashion, and so forth. The “monkey” (responsibility) to a large extent is on the back of the teacher.
But In the business world, think of your boss / owner as someone who went in to business to make money and take care of her family. She did not start all of this just to hand out money to a stranger (you). At some point, the business was making enough money, and tasks were piling up, so she had not choice but to hire you. It’s important to understand that in business, the owners/bosses don’t want to hire and employee you – they have no choice. The monkey is on your back. You need to prove your worth and be valuable.
So once you are hired, she has these things in mind:
1. That you are moving the business drivers for her business, and
2. You think like her, and do things that she wants done, and take things OFF of her desk – you don’t give her things to do. You do them before she asks you to.
Research for the Boss
So, when it comes to research, a super proactive person, who wants to get promoted, just spontaneously does research on their own, and brings it to the boss in a way that she will appreciate.
Or, sometimes the boss will say, “Hey, I just heard about this trend,” or “Our competitor just added this,” and she wants you to find out what informed business decision she needs to make because of this new development.
Now, if you show up with a 20 page paper, she will say: “I don’t have time to read that! I just want to know what to do!!!”
If you throw a one page summary on her desk, she will say: “Well, how do I even know if I want to take the time to read that?!”
If you say, “Boss, this is what I learned! (verbally),” she will say, “I’m on my way to a meeting! No time for you!”
If you provide a 1 page summary with a bold printed single statement at the top that states the point of the paper she will say: “Where are your references? How do I know this is credible?”
So what do you do? A Governing Thought (Or Top Down) Paper.
