Summary:
As we learned, to summarize is to shorten and report. It is not about your perspective at all. Instead, it is about accurately presenting the argument and information someone else has crafted. In the process of summarizing, you will be paraphrasing and perhaps even quoting. But you do make decisions in the process of summarizing. You must decide what you think the “primary claim” is. You must decide which are the secondary claims, and what evidence is most important to report given the claims being made. In other words, a summary is presentation of your critical reading skills focused on another text.
Your summary should be written in paragraph form and should be 350-500 words. Use the techniques of summary and paraphrasing as you learned about them in the video. Quote minimally, if at all. If you do use a quotation, of course you need the quotation marks.
Outline:
For the outline, use a tiered “traditional outline” format as I outline below. Have at least three tiers, or levels of hierarchy, in your outline. While you don’t need to use complete sentences in the outline, you will need phrases. Phrases will help me understand how you are outlining the argument presented in the documentary because they will allow you to express more complete ideas that you can express with just a word or two. Many, if not most, of the entries on your outline should be phrases.
It is up to you to determine which claims and ideas are the “biggest” ones. This involves making decisions about the hierarchy of ideas. Which ideas are the big ones, and how to other “smaller” ideas” work to support those larger ones. With our text this week, there are many ways you might organize the argument from the film. Don’t present the ideas merely in the order they were presented in the documentary. Instead, reorganize them according to your own critical reading of the argument presented in the film.
Use this format for your outline:
Primary Claim of the film: [Here you should try and summarize the “main idea” or “primary claim” from the film. This might take a couple of sentences.]
Then use something close to this template for your outline. You’ll need to decide how many secondary claims there are, what reasoning to present, etc. Again, the outline is a way that you exhibit your skills of critical reading. Remember to use phrases rather that single words for most of this. I need to be able to follow your own thinking in this outline, so give me enough information in your phrases to do that.
