Speech Outline for Narrative and speech!!

narrative: How I learned to “dance in the rain”

As you see in the syllabus and course folders, the speeches for the entire term are narrative, informative, ceremonial and persuasive. These are your topics for each. We are presently focusing only on the first. one.
Outline due prior to speech day. See pertinent due date in syllabus.

I. The objective of this speech is to tell a 4 minute story that helps illustrate a point. You will practice the following skills:
Introducing yourself confidently
Using a story to illustrate a larger point
Setting up your topic creatively
Organizing your speech ideas clearly (by using the story arc structure, as discussed in class)
Appealing to 5 senses
Building drama in your language through details, suspense, and careful word choice
Escalating and de-escalating drama through use of voice, gesture, non-verbals
Adhering to duration target (4:00 min)
Monitoring yourself and the audience while speaking
Transitioning from point to point
Ending the speech gracefully
II. Develop your listening and analysis skills. After the program of speeches concludes, you are asked to give general feedback and share observations.
III. Be mindful while speaking. You will write a self-critique of your own speech which is graded, earning a maximum of 4 semester points.
The technique (skill) for this speech, in addition to applying the story arc structure, is appealing to our 5 senses in your language.
Bringing in details that appeal to our sense of sight, hearing, taste, smell, and touch you make your speech content more VIVID and engaging.
Goal: Try to appeal to at least 2-3 senses in your speech.
Examples:
(touch/sensation) Instead of saying “I was nervous” you can show it by saying “I could hardly breathe and my hands were drenched with sweat”
(vision/touch) Instead of saying “She was mad at me” you can say “I felt the heat of her laser eyes as she shot me look of death”
(hearing) ….As I walked in the room, everyone hushed and it seemed like the clock ticking became louder
Of course, you would only develop sensory information that is pertinent to the story arc, not just random tastes, smells, for the sake of it.
