From your reading of The History of the Maghreb: An Interpretative Essay, what are the major limitations/ problems of Western scholarship does Abdallah Laroui mention, or interweave in his analysis. Do you think he provides a legitimate alternative to such “distorted” reporting and writing of Maghrebi history? Please give specific examples of countries he deals with.
INSTRUCTIONS
Papers are to be four pages in length (double-spaced, with font no larger than 12). That means at least four full pages of text – not 3 ½. This is not a research paper – in writing the paper you are to make use of only the primary sources we have read for class. Select only one question to answer.
In articulating your argument in the paper, all claims and points must derive from and be demonstrated from the texts themselves. Show you have read the material! You may read secondary material for your own benefit, but it is not to be used in the paper. What you are doing is making your point or argument by citing the texts themselves. This means that you have to have read the texts carefully with an eye toward noticing subtlety and nuance.
Since this is a short paper, it also means that your presentation/argument has to be very tight and concise – you have to think through what you wish to say and lay it out clearly and in a way that supports the points you wish to make.
You must also take account of those passages in the text that might not support your interpretation – you cannot just ignore them and “stack the deck” by only choosing passages that support your view.
Given that this is a short essay, direct quotations should be kept to a minimum, or when used, kept very brief (no more than two lines) and incorporated directly into the text. Do not place additional spacing between paragraphs. Indirect quotes must be cited as carefully as direct quotes.
Footnotes are not necessary; page references to the text cited are to be placed in parentheses following direct and indirect quotes. All page references should be to the editions of primary sources found on the syllabus
