Here are the 5 questions asked and the principal responses: Do you play a major role in curriculum design and instruction? “I feel like I have been playing a more prominent role with experience and understanding of elementary teaching and learning. I started in my role as an elementary principal with only secondary and middle level teaching experience. There was a steady learning curve as I grew my understanding of developmental reading and math.” What role do you play in aligning curriculum with state standards? “This is primarily done through observation cycles right now, making sure that instruction matches standards. Grade level and department teams are largely charged with the task of alignment during summer curriculum alignment an‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌d other grade level meetings.” How much of your time do you spend coordinating activities for your teachers in curriculum planning, design, and instruction? “Less than I would like! Especially after 2 years of a pandemic. I’m looking forward to shifting more of my focus to collaborating with teachers on these topics next year.” What are some type of curriculum professional development activities that you like to provide for your teachers? “Instructional coaching has proven to be a valuable PD asset for us. It has proven to be more effective as it is job-embedded and includes feedback and follow-up by our coach. ” What future changes would you like to see in the curriculum? “We are currently exploring curriculum adoption in reading instruction that is aligned with research.
