Music in Society and the World
This discussion allows you to consider your experience of music in our society and some examples music from around the world. You will receive 18 points for completing your individual contribution to the discussion and you will receive 2 points for responding to 2 of your classmates after you have submitted your individual thoughts. Your replies to your classmates should be engaging and help to expand the discussion whenever possible. Short replies like “Good job” or “I agree” without further detail will not count as replies worth full credit. For your individual submissions I’m looking to see if you have covered all concepts or questions asked about. I’m not expecting 100% accuracy in your ideas but I’d like for you to have tried to integrate some of the new concepts regarding music that you are learning as much as you are able.
Part 1:
Talk about the ways you use or interact with music in your normal life. Find 3 examples of music with different social functions which you feel are interesting or influential given how you experience music. Discuss how you believe each piece fits it’s social function well or not and talk about what you find interesting or influential about the pieces. Try to include using some of the materials of music which we have looked at this week to help explain your reasoning. (Melody, rhythm, harmony, texture, types of instruments or voices used, dynamics, form, timbre, etc…) Provide links for your 3 chosen examples of music so we can hear what you are describing.
Part 2:
It has been said that music is a universal language. Below are a few examples of music from around the world with differing functions. Listen to each piece and for each one talk about what things sound similar to music you already listen to and what things sound different. Try to include the materials of music in your discussion if you are able to. (Melody, rhythm, harmony, texture, types of instruments or voices used, dynamics, form, timbre, etc…) In addition to your own thoughts for each piece, also address whether you believe the function of each piece matches the sound your are hearing? Try to explain why or why not?
Lullaby from the Lakota tribe of North America (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dNulkDwFAxY)
Knife dance before a wedding in Yemen (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wbt2MaCq3wA)
Work song for fishermen from Japan (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MwmB2eptXz0)
Funeral music from Ghana (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9IrRlqwlnLg)
After you have watched all the videos consider these final questions: Do you agree or disagree about music being a universal language? Please explain. What are ways that a person’s society or culture might be able to uniquely influence how their music sounds? In 500 years what might a scholar be able to infer about you as a person and your society today based on the examples that you provided in Part 1?
