TEACHER INSTRUCTIONS:
Prompt: Compile the ideas you have gathered from the sources (three database articles plus the one from the reader) into a 6-8 page research essay that demonstrates how this issue is problematic and significant. (Remember- you should have already submitted a research proposal. Make sure you read my comments on your proposal. If you did not submit a proposal you need to do so asap. I won’t grade your paper without an approved proposal.) Make sure to argue your position on this issue. You must present at least one perspective that differs from your own. You have two purposes: one is to inform the reader- use evidence that will demonstrate how your topic is significant and problematic. Another purpose is to persuade us of your position by making a claim of solution: what are you recommending? What do you believe should happen? Use evidence to help persuade us that goes beyond your personal opinion by showing what others are doing. This paper should read like a paper for a humanities class; this isn’t a science or social class. In other words, make sure you have a point of view.
Must include ALL 3 types of evidence throughout the essay:
1. Direct quotation: Use direct quotes for several reasons. All direct quotations must be cited with in-text parenthetical citations.
When the writer has phrased something so well, that you want to show off their original words
When we need to see exact words, positive or negative, of either the writer or someone quoted in the article.
When you need to give exact information, such as statistics, data.
2. Paraphrase: A paraphrase is rephrasing a sentence or two of the original text in your own words, preserving the meaning. A direct quotation isn’t necessary. You can use synonyms or change the order of ideas. Paraphrases mean you are still using evidence from the source, and so it must be cited with in-text parenthetical citations.
3. Summary: Use a summary when the article has a lot of information in several paragraphs. You can’t cover it all, so you have to condense the information into a summary. Use only the main points. A summary should be 10-25% of the original length. Don’t summarize too much- several pages, the entire article. This summary must still be cited with in-text parenthetical citations.

My approved research proposal so you have an idea of what to write about (feel free to add more main points to the essay if necessary). Her comments on the submitted proposal were “Sounds like you have a strong understanding of why this topic matters. Look for current solutions of how colleges/universities are trying to help”.
