CMST 20 – Interpersonal Research Project
100 Points
Please select a television show or movie that you have watched and are familiar with, you should probably have watched at least one season of the television show. Your goal in this paper and presentation is to analyze and evaluate one or two interpersonal relationships depicted in the show or movie. You will incorporate a particular concept or set of concepts relevant to interpersonal communication, which you will then do further scholarly research on, to frame your analysis of the relationship(s) in the TV show or movie.
Secondary Option: If you do not want to choose a television show or movie to reflect on, you can choose any aspect of interpersonal communication to unpack.
Your final research paper will be 3-5 pages long, double space, typed in 12-point times new roman font, with 1-inch margins. You will write this paper in four stages. First your proposal, then your research brainstorm, next your annotated bibliography, and finally your paper and presentation of your research. Your presentation will be 3-4 minutes long. These are all worth points and missing one of these assignments will affect your grade.
The exact direction of your analysis is up to you. You must include at least one interpersonal concept or theory that you will research in greater depth and use that concept/theory to frame your analysis of the interpersonal interactions in the show/movie. Since you have to start this project before we have covered everything in class, I encourage you to explore various chapter(s) in the textbook and assigned readings ahead of time to get some ideas for your research.
In your analysis, you will need to provide specific examples from the show to illustrate your points. The examples from the show should be specific and provide sufficient detail to give credibility to the points of your argument. Although you will need to provide a brief synopsis of the show and describe the context for your examples, your goal is to analyze and evaluate interpersonal communication in the show/movie, not describe the storyline. You cannot, and should not, write about every aspect of the show.
Research Paper & Presentation Components
Part One: The Proposal, 5 points
The proposal is a brief summary of your intended research topic and your plan for completing it. You should include the following:
Identify the television show or movie you will be focusing on and the relationship you will be exploring further;
Identify at least two-course concepts that you might use and explain how they apply;
List two possible research questions that connect the relationship(s) to the concepts;
Describe how this research will contribute to our knowledge of interpersonal communication (i.e.: why is this research important/relevant/interesting/useful?);
Identify at least one scholarly article that you might use and briefly explain how it will support your own research
Part Two: The Research Storm, 5 points
The goal of this assignment is two-fold: 1) To refine your topic proposal into a clear rationale for your paper, and 2)to begin reading and organizing the existing scholarly research that will help you write your paper. This particular assignment should include an introduction for your paper, a mind map of your main points, you should create a list of 5 sources that you will be utilizing in this paper.
The Introduction is the first part of your paper, it should be about two paragraphs and should address the following:
Background. Think about what the reader needs to know to understand your research questions. Try to create reader interest in this topic and lay out a broad foundation for the problem that leads to this research paper analysis. Some of this may involve basic background of the show and characters but it won’t be super detailed because that will come later.
Problem/issue/question to be researched. Where is the gap in the understanding of this topic? Is this an understudied dynamic? Has this interpersonal theory been used to describe a relationship in media recently? Describe the context of the problem and the general approach for addressing this problem. Make sure the reader can easily identify the problem.
Purpose and goal of the study. This is essentially your thesis statement. What is the goal of your paper? What are you trying to get out of analyzing this relationship?
Identify important terms and concepts. Identify and define at least two terms, key concepts, or theories that will frame your analysis of this relationship.
Part Three: A Rough Draft, 10 points
As much of your paper should be turned in to be offered feedback.
Part Four: The Paper & Presentation, 80 points
This is due Monday, May 16th
Tip: Your presentation should be presented in a way that a person who has never watched the show and has not taken this class would understand.
Total points for the Team Presentation will be weighted as follows:
