Nature of the Assignment: Present the basic facts about your chosen biblical figure. Imagine
that you’re writing an entry for a Bible dictionary. Where is this figure found in Scripture?
What is his or her relevance to the biblical story? What questions or controversies surround
the interpretation of this figure? Where do you come down on these issues, and why?
Please note that this is meant to be a scholarly paper, not a sermon or devotional!
Stick to details that are explicitly found in the texts and to the documented history of how
various faith communities have interpreted this character.
Parameters: Your paper should be 900–1500 words long or about 3–5 pages, double-spaced.
I’m not a stickler for one style guide format over another, but I am a stickler for consistency
and for proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
Sources: Your paper should include at least three sources. Look at Bible dictionaries for
guidance. MDOB(Mercer Dictionary of the Bible) is a great place to start, but also look at the Anchor Bible Dictionary,
Dictionary of the Bible in Western Culture, etc. Articles in scholarly journals may also provide
useful information. Please don’t be afraid to ask me for help in discovering appropriate
sources.
