The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, or Gustavus Vassa, The African

What are Utopias? According to Fatima Viera (2010) “the concept of Utopia has

been defined with regard to one of four characteristics (1) the content of the

imagined society (2) the literary form into which the utopian imagination has been

crystallized (3) the function of utopia (i.e. the impact that it causes on its readers)

(4) the desire for a better life, caused by a feeling of discontentment towards the

society one lives in” (Viera, 2010, 6). Using one or more of the works we have

discussed in class, examine how the author (s) understands utopia, how he/she sees

utopia as a reaction to an undesirable present and what steps the author(s) urge in

establishing a utopia? For example, how does the author view the ideal citizen?

Does the author imagine a utopia in order to address social disorders such as

stereotyping, stereotypes, racial prejudices, social hierarchies, or the stigmas
