Part 1.
Studies suggest that decades of downsizing have lowered organizational commitment levels. Assume you are a manager in a company that has recently downsized or had to shut your normal operations due to COVID-19. You realize this step had to be taken in order to keep the company afloat. What steps can you and your company take when laying off or furloughing employees to keep from harming the commitment of the survivors?
Part 2. Reply to this response relating to Part 1 from Heather Walton
Hello,
This actually happened to my husband during the start of the pandemic. Enterprise Rent a Car laid off many of their top executives or if two people were in the position, they would just leave one person in that position going forward. These laid-offs came in waves and many of the employees were left fearful of what would happen to their careers or where their position in the company would land. Until word got around what Enterprise was doing for those that they had to lay off. One thing Enterprise Rent a Car did right was given big incentives if they did lay you off by offering big payouts that helped many employees live off for several months before putting that individual in a bind. This definitely helped with the mentality of the employees that if you did get laid off, the company would make sure to do it in a way where they actually care about that person’s lively hood instead of putting them out on the streets.
