Write an essay in which you apply Reading 3
For this essay, you will apply DeGhett’s reading as a “lens” to analyze censorship in relation to deception of the public. You may also incorporate a recent war and or similar example that deals with censorship, whether recent or past tense. As DeGhett’s piece centers around the Gulf War and the photo the U.S. determined “too gruesome to publish”; I want you to consider this and the effect it has on how people then perceive violence and atrocities of war. For example, a great and disheartening point made by DeGhett in their piece demonstrates: “But if I don’t take pictures like these, people like my mom will think war is what they see in movies” (138). You should also think of Stillman’s essay (Reading 2) “Hiroshima: Inheritance of Trauma”. Albeit, Stillman does not discuss censorship; however, I want you to consider the hypothetical here. What if it was decided that Stillman’s interview with Komiko Shoji was “too much” for the public? What information is lost, that is ultimately invaluable? How did Stillman’s piece make you reevaluate war and war trauma? Consider this as you contemplate DeGhett’s point that censorship at one time becomes deceitful. “Sometimes thought, omitting an image means shielding the public from the messy, imprecise consequences of a war –making the coverage incomplete, and even deceptive” (135). Your essay should depend primarily on specific details from your selected example as well as the assigned reading.
