These are the professor’s instructions:

Did the Writer Follow the Writing Process?

* 5 points: Outline & Tiny Rough Draft in the Discussion Board
* 5 points: Peer review done

Did the Writer Achieve the Final Product?
FINAL DRAFT 9-Part Criteria

* 5 points:
1) The Introduction paragraph ends with your CLAIM Statement:
Does the Claim Statement accurately identify whether your position, defending your belief in regards to a controversial/ disputed AND SPECIFIC decision or action, based on the assigned Essay 4 topics?

*20 points:
2) Is it an Essay (Intro paragraph, Body paragraphs, Conclusion paragraph)? ALSO, Essay 4 is a Classic or Toulmin Argument essay, so the body paragraphs need to be arranged following that Argument’s paragraph order. Also, are your body paragraphs in the correct STRUCTURE, and do each body paragraph have the required information in the correct structure order?

FOR A TOULMIN ARGUMENT:
Intro Paragraph, ending with your CLAIM Statement <-- YOUR POSITION ON THE CONTROVERSIAL ISSUE, that is, WHAT YOU BELIEVE TO BE THE TRUTH. Section I (1-2 body paragraphs): 1st REASON for the Claim + EVIDENCE (example or examples from events that actually happened in real life) Section II (1-2 body paragraphs): 2nd REASON for the Claim + EVIDENCE (example or examples from events that actually happened in real life) Section III (1-2 paragraphs): 3rd REASON for the Claim + EVIDENCE (example or examples from events that actually happened in real life) Section IV (1-2 paragraphs): A) Starts with your OPPOSITION’S Reason (respectfully and fairly explained) and then B) your refuting REBUTTAL to the Opposition (why you think they are still wrong) Conclusion Paragraph, starting with Restated Claim Statement * 10 points: 3) The paragraphs of Essay 4 need to total at least 1000 words. So, does the draft meet WORD COUNT? *10 points: 4) All the DETAILS (reasons and evidence) should support the Claim. So, do all the details support that Claim, or are there details that digress from the Claim and therefore need to be deleted and replaced? Is each piece of evidence SPECIFIC and CONCRETE (that is, are there names of places, persons, and so on)? For any source used in a body paragraph (that is, anywhere you use OUTSIDE EVIDENCE in a body paragraph), are the sourced details relevant to the topic sentence, EMBEDDED correctly, and have a corresponding analysis/commentary? 1. Your Topic Sentence. 2. Your explanation of what that topic sentence means (optional) 3. Example pulled from a source -- supporting your Topic Sentence --either “Quoted,” paraphrased, or summarized – with in-text citation: a) Beginning ID tag of name or title and/or b) parentheses at the end (more info in MLA chapter). 4. If you have more than one example, have transitions between examples – Also, In addition, Next, Or, However, On the other hand 5. End your body paragraph with an explanation of what these examples add to our understanding of the Thesis (that is, your CLAIM STATEMENT). * 10 points: 5) Are there any errors in GRAMMAR, like run-ons and fragments? * 10 points: 6) Are there any errors in MECHANICS, like incorrect punctuation (especially comma use), capitalization, and number use? * 10 points: 7) Are there any errors in DICTION, like incorrect word choice (like its vs its, there vs. their, definitely vs defiantly, slang words), deficient transition words (that is, the essay sounds very choppy and disjointed, like a robot speaking), use of "you" in the body paragraphs, awkward phrasing, confused words, awkward phrasing, repetitive word use, and/or too-casual/informal slang/idioms? NOTE: Dr. Ramos DOES ALLOW careful use of "I", "we", and "our" in your essay. NO "YOU" IN THE BODY PARAGRAPHS. * 10 points: 8) Is there at least ONE college-level SOURCE paraphrased or "quoted" in ANYWHERE in Essay 4, and are its MLA documentation (MLA version 8) complete and correct (in-text citation and Work Cited entry), including hanging indentation, alphabetizing, and double-spacing of the Works Cited list? NOTE 1: Suggested college-level sources: any of the Reader Response 1-7 readings in Structures, personal interview -- that is, a conversation -- that you've done with a person who is either a participant, witness, or expert in the issue; an article from an online library database source; an article from a reputable web site (I'll only accept from website from .edu, .gov, .mil, and national new sites like abcnews.com or from news websites found on news aggregators like news.yahoo.com and news.google.com) NOTE 2: You can use EasyBib’s Works Cited web app to help you format a source in your Essay 4, especially if pulled from a reputable web article: NOTE 3: You can use this YouTube tutorial to format your Work Cited page correctly, to double-check what EasyBib gives you * 5 points: 9) Are there any errors in MLA MANUSCRIPT style (that is, paper format) -- corner page numbering, header placement, essay title placement, paragraph indentation, double-space line spacing, AND no extra spaces between header, essay title, and paragraphs?
