The paper must be in APA format – a title page and reference page will need to be included (not part of the 5-7 pages). The font size is 12 and the style is Times New Roman.
The following headings/sections should be used for your paper:
Section 1: Background – Introduction of the change project using PICO:
Patient/Population/Problem – Who or What is the problem?
Intervention – How? What is the proposed intervention?
Comparison – What is the main alternative? (If appropriate.)
Outcome – What are you trying to accomplish, measure, improve, effect?
Section 2: Review of the literature (ROL) on the Patient/Population/Problem. Each student will perform a data base search on the topic. The data base search should be in a professional database – for example: Medline, CINAHL, EbscoHost, etc.
Each student will identify at least 1 (no more than 3) full text article(s), from a peer reviewed journal(s) related to the topic. The article should be no more than 5 years old. All articles identified will be summarized and discussed.
This ROL should be at least 3 pages long and support why the specific area of improvement is important and why change is necessary. The literature should support the clinical practice change.
Section 3: Change Theory – The four stages of Lewin’s Change theory presented. This section should discuss how the Patient/Population Problem is resolved. Use Lewin’s theory as a framework to design a practice improvement plan:
Subcategories
Unfreezing
Involvement (Movement)
Develop a Plan (Plan)
Set goals and objectives (Goals/Objectives) – Set by whom?
Identify areas of support and resistance – major stake holders??
Set Target date – what was the planned date for change? Were there issues? Concerns?
Strategies implemented for change to occur –
Refreezing (Maintenance)
*** Do not forget to address how and when success will be measured and evaluated.
Section 4: Conclusion – this section should include discussion of anticipated barriers and problems as well as suggestions of how to address them. Also discuss what to do if the project is NOT successful.
Support Resources – The Warwick Library provides some examples of how PICO can be applied to nursing problems.
