Ethics Interview Assignment

This assignment involves an in-person interview by the student of an experienced healthcare professional in a different area of healthcare regarding their ethical perspective and practice than that of the student. Submission of a report, including summary and critical analysis, will complete the assignment.
This assignment is intended to support the following stated learning objective:
1. Research and evaluate resources pertaining to ethical in approaching specific ethical issues in healthcare.
In addition, this assignment ought to increase your awareness of the ethical challenges faced by persons in a different profession within the healthcare sector. Hopefully this awareness will lead to greater understanding among dedicated persons with differing professions but with the common aim of providing the highest levels of patient care.
The Interview ( I will provide your with the Interview questions and answers)
1. The person interviewed must be a practitioner in a different professional field of healthcare than you, the interviewer. For example, if you are a nurse, you may interview a hospital social worker or physician or dietician or pharmacist or occupational therapist, etc. Focus on health care providers – individuals directly involved in patient care. Questions regarding this requirement should be directed to the lead instructor.
2. The health care professional to be interviewed shall have at least five years of experience in their present field of practice.
3. Prior to the interview, you shall locate the code of professional ethics that applies to the person being interviewed and become familiar with its contents.
4. The interview must be conducted person to person, without electronic mediation.
5. The interview shall be scheduled in advance at a time and place where privacy is possible.
6. The person to be interviewed may want to have the questions provided in advance to allow for a more developed response. In no case shall written responses substitute for a person-to-person interview.
7. The interview must be solely for the purpose of meeting the requirements of this edition of the course and must be conducted within the time-frame of this edition of the course. Any exception will require the written approval of the lead instructor.
8. The atmosphere of the interview should be cordial and non-accusatory. There should be no dispute with the person interviewed over their views or practices, though you are encouraged to use follow-up questions when needed to clarify the interviewee’s narrative, practices or perspective.
9. If you wish to record the interview you must secure the prior permission of the person interviewed and give them the only copy of the recording when your report is completed.
10. Inquiry during the interview shall include each of the following seven items:
• The interviewee’s professional training and experience, including employment history and present responsibilities.
• Basic ethical values and practices important to the interviewee, including pertinent history behind these values and practices. While the interviewee’s knowledge of formal ethical theories may be discerned, it is not necessary to inquire about this.
• The interviewee’s awareness, assessment, and use of the ethical code(s) of their profession.
• Ethical challenges characteristically faced by practitioners in their profession.
• The role of professional peers and supervisors in the resolution of ethical dilemmas they face.
• At least one ethical case study from the interviewee’s own professional practice, including their analysis of the pertinent information and options, as well as their decision and subsequent review.
• Given the benefit of experience, how they handle ethical situations or dilemmas differently today than in the earlier years of professional practice.
11. It is wise to prepare a verbatim or summary of the relevant conversations as soon as possible after the visit while your memory is fresh.
12. Consider sending a note of appreciation to the person you interviewed. You may share your report with the interviewee as long as that does not impact the integrity of your analysis.
The Report
1. The report shall consist of two distinct parts—the summary of the interview and the ethical analysis. The report shall be at least 1200 words in length. The summary portion shall be at least 600 words in length. The analysis portion of the report shall be at least 600 words in length. There is no stated maximum length for either portion of the report.
2. Include either the text of the professional code of ethics of the person interviewed as an appendix to the paper or provide an accessible link to the code. If included, it shall not count towards the minimum word length requirement.
3. Provide the name, position and contact information (phone and/or email address) of the interviewee for the benefit of your section instructor in confirming the interview.
4. Render your report in Standard English in matters of spelling, punctuation, sentence and paragraph construction, choice of words, and clarity of expression, as well as the introduction and use of acronyms and technical terms.
5. You are expected to use current APA standards which include double spacing and a typeface of 12 pt. Times Roman or Courier, as well as the standards for citing sources and the inclusion of a reliable abstract of the report. (The sample report may be deficient in meeting all APA requirements.)
6. The summary shall include the essential information provided by the interviewee in answering the questions you asked, as well as any other pertinent information from the interview. The information provided in the summary shall serve as the basis for the analysis portion of your report. You may present portions of the summary in a verbatim style. Use quotation marks to distinguish verbatim remarks.
7. Your analysis of the interview will be the most important part of the report and graded as such.
• The analysis shall include a review of the interviewee’s decisions and conduct from the perspectives of ethical theories and Christian ethics.
• The analysis shall identify and classify the interviewee’s ethical values according to standard ethical theories you have studied in the course. Implicit ethical issues shall be identified and adequately discussed in the analysis. Your analysis of the ethical dilemma(s) and/or case study provided by the interviewee should use a schema of analysis. This allows you the opportunity to consider alternatives to the interviewee’s resolution of the ethical dilemma.
• Your analysis shall include the interviewee’s knowledge of the professional code of ethics held by the interviewee’s healthcare profession.
• Do not use this portion of the report to incorporate additional information from the interview.
• You should consult the professional code of ethics held by the interviewee’s healthcare profession in your analysis.
• Utilize at least one research-based scholarly source no older than five years that is appropriate to the interviewee’s profession and the ethical issues raised in the interview.
• The use of resources from specific religious traditions is encouraged but not required. Christian sources are not restricted to the Bible.
8. As to aspect, the analysis should display an empathetic yet critical assessment of the interviewee’s ethical values, conduct and decisions.
• The analysis should also show an awareness of cultural and religious perspectives that may impact the ethical views and practices of the interviewee.
• You should identify your own ethical convictions and religious views that may influence your analysis.
• Finally, you should identify what you have gleaned from the interview that is of potential value in your own practice and gives you a better understanding of the ethical opportunities and challenges in a related field of health care.
If time permits, your section instructor may ask you to share aspects of your report with the members of your section during a SyncSession in a way that protects the privacy of the person you interviewed. You may also share your report with the interviewee as long as that does not impact the integrity of your analysis.
