A new “hobby” that has arisen in the last 10 years is that of establishing Do It Yourself molecular biology labs in basements (or garages) and amateurs doing freelance genetic engineering. Some entrepreneurs have said this is great because it’s how the computer revolution got started–i.e. in D.I.Y.ers’ basements and garages. What are the bioethics issues related to D.I.Y. labs? Should they be monitored by governmental bodies? The U.S. government will freak out and send in the army if you are puttering with nuclear material, but they apparently have no qualms if you are making transgenic cats, dogs, or viruses in your kitchen. Do you think this is a problem or will the next biomed breakthrough come from an amateur working with equipment purchased on eBay?
