Purpose Statement
The purpose of this assignment is to help you develop your understanding of the higher-order critical thinking ability synthesis as the basis or informing element of the self-reflective, cross-disciplinary work you will undertake in UNST 3900. This assignment lays the conceptual groundwork for your practice of interdisciplinarity, integration, and integrative learning in the assignments that follow.

Draft a statement of up to 200 words demonstrating your understanding of how synthesis is fundamental to interdisciplinarity, to integration, and to integrative learning. Obviously, you will need to present succinct definitions of all four terms. Begin your text with a discussion of synthesis, and proceed to a discussion of the three key words as indicated. You may quote from or paraphrase any of the materials in the book associated with this module.

Definitions:
Synthesis is the mental process that takes into account or combines particular or separate elements with the intention of creating a new, more complex whole. It helps give careful thought to a research topic of your choice, first through reflection on previous learning from various courses, then through tying previous knowledge to fresh information to reveal new perspectives on the problem or question you are researching.
Interdisciplinarity is the process through which a person solves a complicated issue, problem, or issue by combining knowledge from two or more disciplines and integrating it in a way that effectively solves the issue.
Integration is the process of combining specific knowledge from one of your disciplines with specific knowledge from another of your disciplines with the goal of addressing a key aspect of a subject or academic question that you are researching.
Integrative learning refers to the knowledge and mindset that a student develops across the curriculum and co-curriculum, from creating simple connections between concepts and experiences to synthesizing and applying what they have learned to new, complex situations both on and off campus.
