1. In the third sentence of the Dream of the Rood, the cross is referred to as a “beacon.” “Beacon” has three meanings. In the modern sense, it refers to a light used as a signal or guide. There are also two Old English
meanings—token or sign, and battle standard (a flag carried during battle to identify troops). How are all three
meanings accurate as applied to the cross?
2. Many of the word choices in the Dream of the Rood are used in war terminology. Choose two-word choices that refer to war, and explain why they are significant in the poem.
3. Solitude and companionship are mentioned in several places in the Dream of the Rood. Give one example of
solitude and one of companionship. Then explain the significance of each, perhaps by discussing whether these
are positive or negative portrayals of solitude and companionship.
4. The dreamer in the Dream of the Road never calls the man on the cross “Jesus.” He instead uses several titles for him. List two of the titles. Then describe how the dreamer’s choice of titles reveals how he views Jesus.
5. Many scholars have puzzled over the last three sentences of the conclusion of the Dream of the Rood, noting
that they seem to go off-topic a bit. Do you agree? Why or why not?
6. First, explain the Anglo-Saxon warrior code. Then answer, How does the Anglo-Saxon heroic code work (or not
work) in this poem?
