Why is it essential for Global HR Managers to train expatriate managers on High and Low Context cultures when they travel abroad to work?

The biggest reason that global HR managers need to train expatriate managers on high and low context cultures when they travel abroad is CORRECT communication. We have learned that high and low context cultures construe things differently from each other whether it be verbal or nonverbal communication or ques. Low context cultures like American or European businesses are more direct and expect whatever is said or written to be done. High context cultures like Asian or Arab companies work more from nonverbal ques and don’t really need everything to be said explicitly. When coming from one culture to another, it is extremely important to know who and what you are dealing with. The key to both is relationships and that is why it is so important to hire and train those expatriate managers. Not only does your company become more diverse in your thinking and understanding, but because of that you are better versed in who you are dealing with. Erin Meyer summarized the best reasons for training expatriate managers saying, “by sidestepping common stereotypes and learning to decode the behavior of other cultures along all the scales, we can avoid giving (and taking!) offense and better capitalize on the strengths of increased diversity (Meyer, 2021).”

You could easily offend a high context culture by merely telling them what you want upfront before making small talk or learning things about the company or family or events in that country for example. And looking at it from the other side, you could “lose” a low context cultures interest by going into all those things. One thing that I do not think was touched on that much was your ability to maneuver. You must be flexible in your thinking and if something is not work, do not be afraid to try and change your thinking to better help the situation.
