The Progressive Era

At the completion of the course the student will be able to:

1. Define delinquency from a legal and behavioral point of view.

2. Apply the definition of delinquency to the appropriate individual behavior.

3. Describe the components of the Juvenile Justice System and their interrelationships in dealing with delinquency.

4. Trace the development of the Juvenile Court Law and compare and contrast this with the law governing adults.

5. Compare and contrast Juvenile Court with the adult court. Through analysis of current crime trends predict the future direction of the Juvenile Court.

6. Define and discuss the police role in relations to Juveniles.

7. Identify and evaluate the role of the school in delinquency causation.

8. Evaluate the role of the juvenile’s “family” in delinquency causation factor and predict probable behavior from familial relationships.

9. Identify and distinguish between the concept of a status offender and a law violator.

10. Correlate the delinquency propensity of the dependent, neglected and/or abused child in relation to the general population.

Term Paper #1 Task:

There are many aspects of the Criminal Justice system in America. As a student you are challenged with understanding these various aspects of our juvenile justice system and applying that information when necessary.

Our textbook demonstrates that history may not have been kind to Juveniles involved in the criminal justice system. Please take a critical look at the history and clearly articulate how juvenile offenders were handled and punished and compare it with the legal process for juveniles now in the 21st century. The different institutional responses to youths who engaged in delinquency often resulted in their inhumane treatment. What was it about these institutions that often produced harmful responses? Finally, take a reflective look at the progressive era and compare the progress with modern times.

Your paper should be authentic and represent college level writing, including APA writing standards (i.e. cover page, an introduction, double-spaced type, running header, page numbering, use of citations and references, etc.). Please use Times New Roman, 12pt Font. Grammar is essential and all students are encouraged to proofread their papers several times before submitting the final draft.

The topic surely touches on sensitive issues, but your research must go beyond a mere emotional response and should be supported by research, empirical data, scientific evidence to prove or disprove your assertions. While it is okay to use the internet to find legitimate, scholarly information to support your assertions (not Wikipedia or blogs, but scholarly articles), your paper should rely predominately on resources located in our library or scholarly journals or reports. All sources, whether from our library or from other scholarly articles, must be properly cited in the text of your paper and included on your references page, using APA formatting. This paper should be 9-11 pages of content. This paper is due before 11:59 p.m. on October 30, 2022.
