Primary Sources

By starting your project here, we begin a process that I hope will continue long after this class: seeing a brief news article or listening to a news segment then asking deeper questions, demanding more information, and seeking it out for your self. The next two pages in this module will help you define a primary source and introduce you to one resource for identifying a source’s reliability and bias. Press NEXT to view or follow those links from here.

WHAT TO DO:

LOCATE 3 substantial media items from different media.

“Substance” means that the news item provides more than a cursory overview of the issue. Substantive items will provide detailed description of an event or issue, often (but not always) including at least two perspectives. These can include investigative reports, in-depth interviews, publicly published government or community statements, public monuments, and videos.
Try to triangulate the three sources. that means that the three items also reflect different perspectives on the same topic or issue.
If I determine that one or more of your sources will not support this project well, you will have the opportunity to replace the selection(s). These sources form the foundation of your research plan and so the quality of the set of sources is especially important.

HOW TO SUBMIT

SUBMIT YOUR PRIMARY SOURCES LIST with each entry in bibliographic format. Then, this step for you final paper’s Bibliography is set to go.

If you have not yet started using a citation management software, I urge you to make time this week to consult ASU Library’s resources Citation Management Tools. You can also locate more detailed demo videos for these citation management tools at YouTube. I have embedded one such video for my preferred citation management application below. The time you take to learn about these tools, choose one, and start using it now will save you SO MUCH time, headache, and error in your future work. I used Chicago Style in the model below. You can use the format most common in your major field. The citation management systems enable you to switch citation formats as needed with a few clicks.
