controversy of national anthem

• First read the lyrics of (all four stanzas of) The Star-Spangled Banner. Second, read this blog post, which is in favor of keeping the song, and then this newspaper article, which opposes it. Finally, write a post based on and include historical facts you have gathered based on the readings listed above.

The star-spangled banner wrote by Francis Scott key in 1814. Key was a poet, an attorney, and, at one point, a prisoner aboard a British ship during the War of 1812. The poem was originally titled “the Defence of Fort M’Henry. Based on the readings most controversies centering on “The Star-Spangled Banner” in recent years have resulted from criticisms of its author’s role as a slaveholder and references to slaves in the third stanza. Which Is “…No refuge could save the hireling and slave From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave,
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.” I would agree with Shaun king because Key owned several slaves. He also abused his powers as a lawyer by prosecuting abolitionists. He also referred to black people as “a distinct and inferior race of people.” I believe a poem written by slave owner guy couldn’t be the national anthem of “ the land of the free and the home of the brave.”
