To write an essay which compares and contrasts two different views of understanding riots. The conservative ideological view tends to see riots, past and present, as disorderly behaviour. The radical ideological view tends to see riots, past and present, as constructive ways of remaking the existing social order. In their understanding of riots, therefore, each ideology sheds light on the relationship between riots and social order and disorder.
Your answer will firstly need to provide a brief definition of a riot and then to identify and outline the key features of conservatism and radicalism. You will then need to outline how these two ideologies view riots using examples from riots either in the past or present or both. In doing so you will also need to tease out how each ideology views the relationship between riots and social order and disorder. In comparing and contrasting the ways in which these two ideologies view riots, remember to identify both similarities and differences. Both are ideological approaches that share some common ground even if they also present quite distinctive views of how to understand riots.
