Watch two of the five movies listed below and write an analysis of the plots, characters, and settings. If you come up with another movie with a fairy tale male protagonist in film, let me know if you would like to substitute this. Again, the story must be considered a “fairy tale”… I thought about Robin Hood, Simba from Lion King and Mowgli from Jungle Book but I do not believe any have magical elements to put them in the fairy tale category. Ditto Toy Story… not a fairy tale!
As you watch the movies, be looking for why these are considered fairy tales… is it the story line, characters, or setting that are magical? Write out a basic plot line for each movie that defines these elements to get your essay started.
Think of how the characters stand as models for boys and girls, as well as if there are negative aspects to the main characters. Think about the stories we have read in class so far that have a focus on girls as the main character, what descriptions define their male counterparts (think fathers/brothers/Prince Charming)? How are males portrayed? How are females portrayed? How do these male heroes compare to the female heroes? Also, is there a good versus evil element? What kind (and gender) of villains are present, and what messages might these evil characters give to children watching? What morals/lessons might children learn from these stories?
