• Please base your portfolio on between 2-4 readings. You do not need to limit yourself to set readings.
• You will probably find it most useful to focus primarily on the psychoanalytically inflected readings although it will also work well to contrast these theories with others that are more sociologically or psychosocially-based.
• Please do not simply summarise the content: try to show that you are thinking through the implications and significance of the concepts.
• It will be helpful to draw connections between the concepts and to tease out the difference in emphasis eg if comparing the insights from Group Relations and Systems you could identify the concept of ‘authority’ as common to both and tease out the different ways in which this idea is understood in the two theories (Systems looks at clarity of hierarchies; Group Relations looks at psychic aspects of our capacity to exercise inner authority and our preparedness to submit to the authority of others)
• Try to be analytic, critical and reflective drawing out the implications of the concepts for an understanding of groups and organisations
• Show evidence of your thinking: the thoughts, ideas, connections, insights, opinions that are evoked in you by the readings
• You may find that focusing on the module core texts (Kahn and Obholzer) is a helpful strategy.
• Keep it lively and engaging: to do this choose readings that ‘speak’ to you and that resonate with you.
• It will be most engaging if you relate the theories that you are discussing to your own experience- showig how you use the theory to explicate your experience.
