Humanites

These guidelines are for a Humanities 1301 course, which focuses on making connections between various areas, including works of art, philosophies/theories, historical events/documents, cultures, belief systems, and famous/infamous people in history. The assignments are informal and require students to make strong connections between ideas and content, using specific examples to support their ideas. The primary source for these assignments is the class text, and students are required to select six or seven works of art/specific examples from two or three chapters, and analyze/discuss them critically. Additionally, the assignments require students to watch and analyze a series of videos by Stephen Hicks, which explain the three time-eras into which all of world history can be divided: 1. the “premodern” age; 2. the “modern” age; and 3. the “post-modern” age. Finally, students must select and include one video from either TED Talks or RSA that applies to their already-selected collection of examples from the class text. The assignments are evaluated based on the selection of examples and the connectivity demonstrated between them.
