Between 1932 and 1972, the infamous Tuskegee Experiment allowed 399 poor and illiterate black men to suffer from syphilis and were denied penicillin so that their suffering and deaths could be studied. Between 1960 and 1971 during the infamous Cincinnati Experiment, the U.S. military purposefully exposed 88 American soldiers to radiation contamination and 25% of them died from this. Finally in 2020, two French doctors on tv openly advocated for testing COVID-19 vaccines by saying this If I can be provocative, shouldn’t we be doing this study in Africa, where there are no masks, no treatments, no resuscitation?
Question: Does science ever cross paths with ethics? Does the scientist have an ethical responsibility to society? Or does the need to answer critical societal questions require measures often deemed extreme?
