What do I mean by ‘general’?
General is vaguer or not as detailed. It is a larger ‘umbrella’ similarity. For example, if I were to compare baseball and basketball, I would note that they are both sports.
What do I mean by ‘specific’?
Specific is more detailed and precise. For example, if I were to compare baseball and basketball, I would note specifically that they are sports that have professional leagues in the US, they are sports that have teams of players who compete against other teams, and they are both sports that require a ball to play the sport.
Why would I not start with a general comparison of ‘they are sports that have professional leagues in the US’?
I could, but it makes my next step harder. My three specific similarities would have to be even more precise about the professional leagues. I would have to note, they are sports that have professional leagues in the US with major teams in New York; they are sports that have professional leagues in the US that generate a lot of revenue; they are sports that have professional leagues in the US with plays known around the world.
