Viewing Plant CellsGo back to the virtual microscope using the “Explore” option, and again observe the “Plant Cells” slide (under the Plant Slides group of slides). Start out focusing with the lowest-power lens, then work your way up through the lenses to look at it under high power. All plant cells are surrounded by a rigid cell wall on the outside of the cell membrane. The cell walls should be dark in color. Try to pick out individual cells based on areas surrounded by a single wall. The cell membrane is held tightly against the cell wall so it is almost impossible to detect. The structures inside the cell are called organelles. The most prominent here are the nuclei, which appear as dark circles with splotches inside them, and the chloroplasts, which are smaller green blotches inside of the cells.

Viewing Animal cells (human cheek cells)Go back to the virtual microscope using the “Explore” option, choose the “Human” slide set, and observe Stratified Squamous Epithelium, which is the tissue type found inside the human mouth. The cells at the edges are constantly sloughing away. These cells are nearly dead and function to cover and protect so they have no complex inner structure. The cell membranes are stained with a dye so they show up as pink or purple lines. The only organelle visible is the nucleus, which is roughly circular and filled with splotchy material

Viewing Single-celled organisms There are an incredible array of single-celled organisms living in the world, including the group of microbes we call bacteria. Using the “Explore” function of the Virtual Microscope, click on “Explore”, choose the “Bacteria Slides” group, and view the “Acid Fast Mix” slide (which has two different bacterial species on it). After focusing on the slide, work your way through the different objective lenses to view the slide with the 100x objective lens (1000x total magnification). These cells are very small (most will appear smaller than a grain of rice even when magnified 1000 times), and will not have visible organelles as the plant and animal cells did. Many of the cells are clustered together in large clumps.*
