The century between the Congress of Vienna and the explosive events in August 1914 was not as quiet or peaceful as some like to portray. If anything, it was a century of revolution. After the dust settled on the battlefield of Waterloo, there were violent revolutions in the 1820s, the 1830s, 1848, the 1860s and the 1870s. There was a large regional war in the Crimea, yes the same basic area as our current issues between Russia and the Ukraine. That war contributed to the events surrounding the creation of both Italy and Germany (as you should discover and document in your assignment on that moment). Then, though, after 1870, the somewhat crazy or revolutionary events stopped.
It wasn’t, though, the stop of coming peace, but rather the calm before the storm. The next 40 years would lead to various decisions, alliances, people and events that inexorably led to August 1914. The new Germany (old Prussia) was at the center of it all. However, how Germany acted with Bismarck at the helm was different than after he was fired by Kaiser Wilhelm II.

Examine the rising tensions in Europe in the 1890-1914 time. What issues, people and events conspired to create the crisis that would lead to war in 1914? You should also be clear to connect some of the various “isms” to these events. This assignment does NOT deal with any war events. You should list at least 5 different points (issues, people, or events); there are perhaps as many as 20.
